HOBY - (Hugh O'Brian Youth)

In 1958, the movie and television actor Hugh O'Brian, best known for his portrayal of Wyatt Earp, returned from a trip to Africa where he visited Dr. Albert Schweitzer. Motivated by his words, "the most important thing in education is to teach young poeple how to think for themselves", established the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Foundation (HOBY).

From 1958 to 1967, leadership seminars took place in California for high school sophomores in Los Angeles. In 1968, the scope of HOBY grew to include national and international participants. Seminar locations expanded to major cities across the United States. In an effort to include more students, three day seminars were instituted in 1977 and today also take place in Canada, the Bahamas, Mexico and Jamaica. Visit HOBY for more information.

Early in the Fall, every school in the country is given the chance to select the most outstanding sophomore student and register that person for the leadership seminar. The student is able to attend the weekend seminar the end of May. This seminar exposing the student to all levels of leadership in their local areas. Business professionals come together to provide the students with information on preparing for the future and challenges each one to do their very best in school and in life. This is not an Optimist program, but we support it because we seek to "Bring out the best in Kids".

The NTX District works with two HOBY Seminar sites: TX North (DFW area) and the Far West TX HOBY (New Mexico and West TX area. Each NTX Optimist club in these parts of our District is encouraged to work with their schools each Fall to insure that every school (both public and private/charter) has at least one sophomore student registered for the local Seminar each year. The schools receive registration packets from HOBY National each Fall.

The Optimist Creed

Promise Yourself …

To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.

To talk health, happiness, and Prosperity to every person you meet.

To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.

To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.

To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.

To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.

To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.

To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
